Whales live in the ocean, right? So before we can make the whale, we better get the ocean ready.  Ann had the kids prep a piece of cardboard paper with water and then distributed powdered blue paint.  To that they added turquoise and yellow until the entire page was colored.  The plan is to then cut them into waves once they are dry. ...

During lunch today, Ann picked up the newspaper as usual to veg out while eating. She came across an article in the Globe about the North Atlantic right whale, which is one of the most endangered species on the planet.  She cut out pictures from the article and talked to the kids about it.  They decided they are going to learn all about whales in the next few weeks. The middle group kids learned about pineapples the other day. Richard brought one in for their group time. They passed it around to see how heavy and prickly they are, and talked about how they grow on trees and are yellow inside. Richard sliced it up and gave them all a taste – it was a hit with some 🙂 ...

The extended day kids made frozen yogurt on Thursday!  Ann had snagged an ice cream maker from a yard sale and brought it in yesterday for some fun.  They made two batches of chocolate chocolate chip frozen yogurt, next week they will work on sorbet. The first batch was nice and cold but the second one was more defrosted, which Ann asked them if they knew what it meant and they did!  Each kid cranked ... ...

The oldest group are reading the story of Jason and the Argonauts. On Monday they finished the first chapter, where Jason has to defeat the fire breathing bulls.  Afterward they recreated the scene with cut out bulls that Katie brought in.  She told them they could make the bulls do whatever they want.  One of the kiddies made his bull eating chocolate chip cookies… ...

The youngest group, believe it or not, has been studying insect anatomy the last week or so.  They can name all the parts – ask them where the thorax is.  They’ve made their own insects, adding a part every day or so.  The finished products are hanging up on the wall by the playground door. ...
